Love in Desolation

He stands, a dark shroud wrapped around him. Twisted clouds of nightmares swirl about. Thoughts turn to ash in the presence of the truth. A truth known, but denied. His heart once moved and beated with the song of love. Fierce love stored up and poured out. Emptied out like a torrent upon sunbaked earth. Always raining in lands long dry and dead. Falling wasted upon infirtile fields, no seeds, no life. Now knowing that love is dying. Almost dead, starving. Once beautiful now emaciated. Parched bones covered by leather that was once the illustrious flesh of the sweetest beauty. Now lying in a wasteland sobbing out last precious moisture. Tears mingled with blood trail down her cheeks. Her time is almost up in a world that doesn’t know her.

He approchesĀ  her, feeling the remaining greatness of her. He kneels in awe before her, knowing who and what she is. He looks into her eyes, eyes that speak sadness to any who now look and says, “If there is none who know love, who know you, then I will simply love, love and love none besides.”

She looks up at his words and knows him. She tries to smile but it won’t come. Too much pain has come to her for that. She answers with tear strained voice, “Do not say that. There are few yet who know. Find and love, share that love, and let me be reborn. If you love only me then love is wasted love for it sees only its sad reflection.”

He is shaken by these words. He traveled far to find her. Across lands few have ever been. He falls from his knees to sit upon hard earth. Looking at her he answers, “But I have tried and failed. There are none that I can find across this broad world who know you. They speak of you, yet it is with two tongues they speak.”

She weeps for a moment, red staining her cheeks further as she has nothing but blood left for tears. Finally speaking again she says, “I know, my land is dying for want of love. Love is truth and true worship. But loving love is waste. For love exists not for me, but for people. I exist for you, not you for me. If you love me you will love others. That is how you can love me with the best love.”

He thinks for a moment. Realizing the sense in her words he says to her, “I hear now the wisdom in your words. I came here to help you and instead it is I who was helped. Now I must go to save myself and with that save you as well.”

As he rises to leave this desolate place she sighs, staring at the ground before her. He turns and looks. Shock turns to smile across his face as he sees the cause of her sigh. A single flower blooms red and white. It hadĀ  been growing all this time from the flow of her tears. Only now seen because someone cared to look.
